Degrees and Certifications:
BS in Elementary Education Middle School Science Endorsement
Mrs. Vanessa Uhls
Hello! I'm your friendly neighborhood 6th grade Earth Science teacher, Mrs. Uhls. I graduated from SIUE in 2017 with an Elementary Ed degree and Middle School Science endorsement. The 2019-2020 year will be my third year teaching and my third year at Fulton. I also the head coach for the Robotics Team. I am a veteran, mom to an awesome little boy, a military wife, and I have the cutest dog in the world; Koda Yoda Uhls.
I have spent the past two years focusing my creating engaging, inquiry-based units that will help students of all abilities meet the NGSS standards in Earth Science. We cover Earth's Layers, Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Weather, Energy, and my personal favorites: Water and Space! I do what I can to integrate recent and relevant world events to what we are learning. There are a lot of little things you can do that can make a big difference to help our planet, and I try to integrate that into my teaching. In my eyes, my students are not just students, they are consumers, important decision makers, and the future of our planet.
Earth Science has become something I'm very passionate about. My future plans include getting my Master's degree in Environmental Education. After teaching our unit on Human Water Use this year, I made the decision to stop eating meat and to drink less soda. This led to watching several documentaries on food (Forks Over Knives, In Defense of Food, Fed Up, Rotten, etc.) which I highly recommend checking out on Netflix. This past summer, I visited Florida, researched ways to improve differentiating instruction in my classroom, helped my son reach his reading goals through our town library's summer reading program, and played A TON of Uno and Candyland.
I look forward to this upcoming school year!
